Demand and Capacity Planning NHS: The Importance of Real-Time Data Post Pandemic

Data analytics and business intelligence has proved critical to national planning during the pandemic, helping with predictive modelling and capacity planning across the NHS at a time when there was no precedent for how the situation would unfold.

 

But at a local level, the real-time data needed to help individual trusts plan for the overwhelming surge on services has not been readily available. In the most part, because data capture is prohibitively slow, with a lengthy lag between what is happening on the ground and the analysis, due to the information being stored in different parts of the trust.

 

This poses not only a risk to patient care, but also to the efficiency of the trust, with capacity issues and resource gaps only becoming apparent when it reaches a critical level.

 

If trusts are to try and resume normal services, whilst being prepared for any further peaks in demand due to the virus, they need to be able to access and analyse their data, establish real-time reporting and share this information across localities.
